Why Punctuality Matters for Students (and Teachers!)
By Sandra Szczygiel, MS, LPCC-S
Punctuality is a life skill that fosters respect, discipline, and responsibility. Students and teachers who are punctual help to build a positive learning environment that promotes success. Punctuality ensures that a student doesn’t miss the beginning of classroom instruction, which often includes important announcements, instructions, and an overview of the lesson’s objectives. Punctual teachers can maximize instructional time, ensuring that all planned topics are covered. Another benefit of being punctual includes minimizing disruptions, which interfere with focus/engagement, the flow of a lesson, and the actual amount of time of instruction.
Punctuality also nurtures the development of good habits, such as effective time management skills, self-discipline, personal accountability, and respect for oneself as well as for others.
Some tips for developing punctuality (and avoiding procrastination) include creating a daily routine, using reminders/alarms, preparing ahead of time, and setting realistic time goals. Punctuality that is developed early in life will lead to better academic experiences and foster overall character development.
