For the Faithful
Positivity
Choosing words and actions that inspire hope and forward momentum
Our current faith‑based resources are written from a Christian perspective, but we know that many other faith traditions also nurture strong character, and we want to honor and uplift that diversity.
We are actively seeking contributors from additional faith traditions who would like to help us expand this section. If you are interested, we would be grateful to partner with you.
Positivity helps believers face difficulties with hope rooted in God’s promises.
When we choose encouragement over discouragement, we uplift others and strengthen faith. Positivity creates a community where joy and resilience flourish.
Essay
Faith as Positivity
By Rev. Dr. Roger Braun, Retired Methodist Minister, guest columnist
In many respects, faith is a committed, firm, positive belief in something or someone. People use the term interchangeably. “I have faith in your abilities to solve the problem,” becomes “I am positive that you have the abilities to solve the problem.” “I have faith that everything will work out for the best,” becomes “I am positive that things will work out for the best.” Faith has to be positive, or it is not faith; it is anxiety.
The Old and New Testaments seek to tell the story of God so that people will have faith that God is a God of positivity. God is for humanity. God loves the creation and loves humanity, even when it is fallen and corrupt. To have faith in this God is to be aware of all the positive promises God will fulfill that are found in the Bible.
God is for us! God has promised that humanity will be redeemed; our souls will be saved; and we will all return to God who gives us life. God seeks to draw all humanity back to God. God is a God of positivity, not condemnation. In Revelation 22:2, it tells of a tree whose leaves “are for the healing of the nations.” My own positive faith tells me that in the end God will have the final positive word for our souls – “healing.”
This month, how will you use your positivity to draw closer to God?
