Fostering Mental Health Leads to Improved Focus and Concentration in the Classroom

By Sandra Szczygiel, MS, LPCC-S

Good mental health is vitally important in our daily lives. It is crucial for children as they develop intellectually, emotionally, socially, and even physically. Poor mental health, especially brought about by trauma, can halt growth in all these areas and, in some cases, can cause regression. Fostering mental wellness in the classroom lays the foundation for students to thrive as adults and in their current lives. Good mental health helps with motivation and gives students the opportunity to engage more fully in their studies, which leads to increased learning.

Students who have mental wellness can better focus, maintain concentration, minimize the impact of distractions, and learn on a deeper level. If mental health is strong, the brain can allocate more energy to learning tasks, such as absorbing information, following complex instructions, and remaining attentive throughout longer lessons. In addition, mental wellness fosters critical thinking skills, which can lead to improved problem-solving skills, which in turn lowers impulsive behavior.

Teachers can foster good mental health by creating a positive and inclusive classroom environment, promoting healthy routines at home as well as in the classroom, and providing mental health resources and support.
