For the Classroom
Respect
Honoring others by treating them with dignity
Respect forms the foundation of a healthy school culture.
When educators model dignity and care, students learn to treat others the same way. Respect strengthens relationships and reduces conflict.
Essay
Respectful Students
by Jill Tomey
Imagine a classroom where students feel safe and comfortable sharing their ideas and asking questions. They know their teacher and classmates will respect their opinions, even if they disagree. This type of environment is conducive to learning and critical thinking. Students are more likely to take risks and try new things when they know they will not be ridiculed or judged. For example, a student with a different perspective on a social studies topic may be more likely to share their opinion if they know their classmates will listen respectfully. The other students will benefit from another viewpoint. Learning in this environment prepares them all to be successful in future relationships, their families, communities, and eventually the workplace.
Studies show that students who reported feeling respected by their teachers were more likely to have higher GPAs and test scores. The study also found that students who reported feeling respected by their peers were more likely to be engaged in their learning and to participate in class discussions. When students feel respected, they are more likely to be engaged in their learning, participate in class, and build strong relationships with their peers and teachers. This can lead to better academic progress, reduced bullying and harassment, and a more positive and supportive school climate.
