Converting Anger into Passion

by Mary Andres Russell

Have you met Cecil Evans?  He is the man who walks the streets of Walnut Hills and Avondale picking up litter and talking with people – anyone who will listen – about the importance of cleaning up.  Cecil has a deep, life-long passion for the Earth.  Rooted in his upbringing on a Georgia farm, he is fascinated by Creation.  And he is deeply concerned about the garbage along Greater Cincinnati waterways and highways.

He used to get angry about it — shake his fist and honk his horn at litterers.  Then he read our “Achieving True Success” book about the 49 character qualities and decided that anger wasn’t the right approach.  He started talking to people about littering and the importance of picking up after yourself.  His change in approach changed everything.

People are now seeking him out to speak to young people about cleaning up.  Mr. Evans sees picking up after yourself as a basic step in character.  When we respect the Earth, we earn self-respect.  When we honor the Earth, we honor ourselves.  I think he’s right.  Have one conversation with this passionate man and you’ll never walk by litter again without bending over and picking it up.

This month, follow Mr. Evans’ lead.  Is there something in our culture that angers you? What are you passionate about? Who or what do you honor?  Honor your passion as you honor other people.  And channel your passion in productive ways.
