Faith Community Statistics

Notes on developing the statistical data for the report "County Churches, Mosques, Synagogues and Temples for Character County Region" dated October 3, 2000, prepared by the Faith Committee of the Character Council of Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky
November 12, 2000

  1. Obtain the current yellow pages for each county to be included in the study. For counties for which this was not readily available, the book was ordered for each such county from "Directory Distributing Associates" in St. Louis for a nominal fee. 1-800-900-7516.

  2. Create a worksheet in the form of a table with the first column to contain denominations or type of congregation, followed by one column for each county.

  3. Select a county. Copy onto the master list in the first column the different denominations or types of churches listed in the yellow pages under "churches".

  4. For each denomination or type of church, count the number of church entries in that category and post the total onto the master list opposite the denomination or church type and in the column for the county.

    Caution:
    1. Beware to not count the same church more than once. A church may list itself multiple times, as for example, in a denominational category and then again under "Christian Church", etc.
    2. Beware to not include in the count a church which resides in a different county, but is also entering its name in the yellow pages for this county. This may require an analysis of the telephone exchange or the address.

  5. Check the yellow pages under the categories of synagogues, temples and mosques. Add categories as appropriate to the master list, and post the total number in each category to the master list under the column for this county.

  6. Compute the total of the entries in the column, to get the total number of faith congregations in the county. Add a "total" category to the master list and post this total on this line under the column for this county.

  7. Decide what groupings of congregations into which you wish to summarize the congregations in the county, as for example, protestant, catholic, jewish, and other. Below the "total" entry on the master list, add a line for each of the groups chosen for the summary, i.e. protestant, catholic, etc.

  8. For each of the summary groups listed on the master list in #7, calculate the number of congregations in that group by adding the appropriate numbers form the categories above in that column for that county. The total of the numbers in the groups in #7 should equal the number in the "total" line for the county.

  9. Repeat steps # 4 - 6, 8 for each additional county, simply inserting in the master list alphabetically each denomination or type of congregation not already included in the master list.

  10. When all counties have been completed, copy the data from the worksheet to appropriate listings and summary tables for presentation.

Note: The resulting church statistical values for a county will understate the actual number of congregations in that county to the extent there are congregations which are not listed in the yellow pages.
