ANCHOR BAPTIST CHURCH
A Model "Church of Character"
November 21, 2001
Anchor Baptist Church is a Southern Baptist
church of approximately 125 parishioners, founded
13 years ago and led by Pastor Lee McDowell. With
just a few "senior" adults, the congregation is
comprised mostly of young to middle-aged families
from a variety of employment backgrounds from
professional to hourly employees. The congregation
is predominately white, with some Hispanics and a
small number of Afro-Americans. Paid staff includes
Pastor Lee McDowell, who is full-time, and two
part-time office assistants.
Anchor is located on the far northwest side of
Houston, Texas, in a largely white, blue-collar
community situated between two established
neighborhoods. This ethnically diverse area is
beginning to experience growth and development.
Congregational services include a Sunday morning
worship service, Sunday School for all ages, and
Sunday evening discipleship classes for teens and
adults as well as children's choirs. Similar
discipleship opportunities are offered following
the Wednesday evening prayer time, along with
KidsKorner (like a children's church) for the boys
and girls.
Examples of outreach to the community include
its FAITH teams groups from the Sunday School
classes that contact church visitors and make other
visits meeting ministry needs, and its extensive
distribution of flyers to neighborhood homes
inviting residents to special activities at the
church, such as "2001: The Year of the Character
family at Anchor", Fall Fest (an alternative to
Halloween), special seminars and lectures, and
other church services and events.
