DAVID AND SAUL

Even though God had appointed Saul the first King of Israel in 1051 BC, Saul soon fell out of favor, and God anointed David, a shepherd boy, to be King. When Saul found out that his family would not rule, he wanted to kill David. Saul sent David out to fight the Philistines. When David returned victorious, and the people sang his praises, Saul became angrier. Eventually, David left the King’s court. Saul pursued David. God protected David and he always escaped Saul’s grasp. David was determined that he would not do anything to Saul, because Saul was still God’s anointed King. At one point, David was close enough to Saul to cut off a piece of Saul’s garment. This soon bothered David’s conscience. David showed Saul the piece he had cut from Saul’s garment. Saul knew that David had been close enough to kill him. Saul said “You are more righteous than I. You have dealt well with me, while I have dealt wickedly with you... The Lord delivered me into your hand and you did not kill me...So may the Lord reward you.” (1 Samuel 24:17-19) David’s reward for treating Saul righteously was that he became King.

[1 Samuel 16-25]
